I killed my Xaolan before I got Clive and I was able to finish the Fred quest. I remember reading somewhere that you have to have Xaolan in your team to get Clive or something like that (was a long time ago) anyway I was able to finish Fred's quest after killing my Xaolan for her stars ^_^
