The exclamation points mean they do not work and will not work because the bases do not match up. Question marks are ones that have been submitted but not confirmed by an admin
Ones that have X's are confirmed as fake and I believeeee no one else can submit that recipe ever again
Even though some are not confirmed it's common sense some obviously are correct.. For example iron ore + iron ore = iron claws
Before using recipes on here I'd suggest you should gather some basic knowledge of bases, ranks, and types. You can search "compound", "alchemy" etc on here or the official forum. I've seen some guides on the official forum using recipes from here and going into detail step by step. So just search around til you get the hang of it
Start slow
If you don't know what the negatives and positives mean, read up on alchemy. Pretty self explanatory
