*wants to say something too*^^
since i am most of time bursting a wind in my teams...(i think its pretty unfair to ignore other elements only because water gives most exp >:| )
1) the spd-up-thing:
in general it doesnt affect the rate much if you and your horses have good average speed. It mostly fails when you are training on fast mobs, like bees, or with a melee pet team, using tigers, utans or pandas. (Pandas are putting in danger the combo anyway on a very high rate)
Further, most people use kelan equip/spd belt for burst, so wind can simply equip the horse otherwise than anyone else if there are any problems. On the other hand, spd up can be nice if you have a fast fire in the team, when you dont have combo problems. It can speed up the one single horse enough to still get its attack considered as main attack for exp, which gives you some more than if the players attack is considered.
2) Wind and Water in one team should pay attention: wind should always be slower than Water, otherwise the EXP will sink.
3) On crits: crits actually dont give you like 10k extra exp but simply some more. I dont know exactly how much (maybe +10 or 20%?), and if it depends on the crit-percentage you use.

btw: robbie, unfortunally your water sequence does only work with manually burst^^

i dont know if its even possible to get considerable exp, but for sure, you need 1 to cast all the water spells, the ones with the most matk/atk shoudl do the attacking, since you need dmg to get exp. You may exchange the atk/spellcasting sometimes to equilibrate the exp though.
