well,somehow compound is a litle bit weird..

I got cursed crossbow (wood/grass) by compounding dragon staff (wood/magic)
with bronzed halberd (copper/wood)

see...
where's the grass?

it looks like another one that can't be explained...

But primary is supposed to follow the first item's base... isn't it? Exceptions to that law, even if only one is known, means there could be more like it out there. Meaning there may be items we don't have in the database yet.

but is it sure that the second base item is copper, and not fur?

pbwiki also confims second base is copper. they even have bronze cuffs = magic bracers + rock ax (copper base).

horse shoes looks very weird. in these examples horse shoes is also acting as a grass base.

yea these are some of the mysteries of compounding which have been confusing me for days hehe,i guesss we still have a lot to find about alchemy

I think secondary materials are more flexible than the primary material, but even that one looks weird. Maybe it's possible that similar materials (such as grass and wood, or metal and rock) can be changed to each other in some cases? That would explain the common stone and straw mushroom thing also. (Sorry, I didn't see your post earlier ^^; )
