Wanna take care of the useless users that register? Ones with 0 in everything?
1. Post a message informing everyone that a user purge is scheduled for this date.
2. Instruct them that anyone who wishes to keep their account must have 5 in one stat (Posts, Compounds, Etc.) If you have less than 5 in a stat please spam this post until you get 5 Posts.
3. On date of purge Shutdown and purge user list of any user with less than 5 post, etc.
4. Reopen site with a much leaner database.
Wanna try to reduce overhead even more?
Try to setup a mechanism that all added items must be approved by an admin before inserting into the database. This will get rid of redundant Items.
For compounding getting the compound calculator would almost totally alleviate the need to have user added compounds. I am currently working on a private one using my in-house WAMP (Windows 2k8, Apache, MySQL, Php) Server. This will trim the database significantly and make the site more dynamic driven rather than data driven.
See each action on this site will ping the database. The goal is to get as much content dynamically driven rather than static as possible. I can imagine the day when all you have to do is add the new items in a version to the site and then all the compounds that can be used to make the item or use the item will be automatically generated. No more user spam adding compounds to database.
As for the Spam Posting all is needed is a simple captcha to be entered when hitting Post.
