In getting a skill like Ds damage should be important however I think the reason why mages get it too is because it does a status effect e.g Mess for example and while the debate still raves on about Int having an effect on that part of the skill it would be beneficial because they are dealing damage (even if its minimal) and have a chance of putting the enemy in a state which they cant attack.
