Just... I don't know if I should... if you google "gimp" you will find the site for it. It is an advanced image editor that uses layers in the image so you can edit parts of the picture without messing up the other stuff. (PS is an easier one to use, but costs $100 or more)
As an example, look at the map in my sig:
1. I have a black background.
2. pasted over that is an image from a file in the WLO folder.
3. over that is the image you get from the globe in the game.
4. where the ships are, I cut holes in the globe map so we could see the ships instead of the wheel icons.
5. The Mediterranean map is assembled from many screenshots.
6. I put wheel icons over the Mediterranean map on a new layer.
7. Each piece of text is another layer, on top of the map. I can move, edit, re-size these without messing up the map.
8. Actually, there are 2 text layers for each place, to make black drop shadows.
Anyway, GIMP is rather difficult to work with if you haven't practiced.
