Here's a very important reason why WLO is addicting. It isn't absolutely necessary to have a team. Solo is a very viable way of leveling up. I've hated mmo's that required you to have a full team just to grind levels. There's always a chance someone screws it all up or there's some douche you don't wanna be in a team with.
