In this guide I will attempt to explain my understanding of alchemy in Wonderland. Maybe this idea been beaten into the ground. But I find some of the other guides to be good but not complete.
[Basic Alchemy Principles]
Every Item has a Rank whether it is 0-50. If you look on a item it will tell you its rank under its information display. This is the one of the most important things about Alchemy to understand.
Every Item is made up of Main Base or Main Base and Sub-Bases. It like a hotdog. You got the bun, wiener, and condiments. So a hotdog has 3 bases to make up the whole. Alchemy is the same way. You have a set number of bases whit one as a main base to make up its whole. For the example of a Hot dog you have a Main Base of Bread and 2 sub-bases of meat and condiments. Together the whole makes a complete hotdog for your enjoyment.
In Wonderland an easy example of Main Base and Sub-Base is Skeleton Iron Sword. Its Main Base is Iron with a Sub-Base of Hard Tissue. Those 2 Bases make up a Skeleton Iron Sword.
How Base Item Rank is determined in a Compound
Contrary to what some other primers and guides say. Whichever Item you use with the lowest rank is the base Rank of a Compound. There is no adding together then dividing to get a mean rank between all items. Which ever is lowest is the base rank.
So if you compound Rank 17 Iron with Rank 20 Hard Tissue. Ur base rank is going to be 17. Not 17+20=37/2=18.5 or 18. 18 Will not be your base Rank. It will always be 17. Cuz that is the lowest Rank. It doesn't matter which alchemy you use. The lowest rank always determines the base rank. If you ignore this and do the mean rank method of division you will be disappointed over and over.
Success in Alchemy
How do you get good success in compounding with Alchemy. Well it depends on what level your alchemy is for one thing. If you have very low level alchemy skill. Don't expect to be successful a lot in compounding. It also depends on what Alchemy you use.
Primary has the basic success rate. Junior has a higher base success rate than Primary. Superior has an even higher base success rate than Junior. Primary has a bonus Jump of +0 when successful. Junior has a bonus jump of +1 and Superior has +2. So even with primary if your successful. It doesn't mean you will get a higher level Item. It depends on the level of the skill and how successful you are. It has a bit of luck involved too.
If you try a compound that need a lot of jump in Item rank for you want. Don't be upset when you don't get it. Just keep trying or use an Alchemy Book. Which will be covered later.
What is a compounding range. Well you know all compounds are made of bases. Bases determine what item you get back when you compound. An Item range is how many items have the same Main Base/Sub Base in your alchemy range. The more available with the right bases the harder it is to get what you want without using alchemy books.
Lets Take Iron/Wood. Starting from Item Rank 7 all the way to Item Rank 25 there is a Iron/Wood Weapon. So if you compound Iron Net Boots(IR17)+Wooden Pedals(IR18)+Iron Net Boots using Junior Alchemy. You could get anywhere from an Item rank 9 to a Item rank 21 Iron/Wood Item. It is alot harder to get the item you want if there is a ton of items with the same bases in ur range. You will eventually get it but it might take 30 tries before you get it.
Personally I try to use Items with more unique bases to compound with than a item that has alot of same bases. They are normally easier to get but normally cost a bit more. But useful if your Alchemy skill is not leveled up real high.
This is one of the most important components of Alchemy. The result modifier is what you get when you compound 2 or more items together. What you get is based of the result modifier and what you compound. Lets say you compound a Skeleton Iron Sword. You get Some Iron Net Boots and a Wolf Tooth. You put them in the boxes and hit the button. If you get a result modifier of +2 or a jump of 2 Item Ranks. You will get a Skeleton Iron Sword. If you do not achieve the result. What you get in return will vary. But that is what a Result modifier is.
What is an Alchemy Book? Besides being as good source of income for non-alchemist people. It is what you use when you want to achieve greater results.
Right Now there are 4 alchemy books. Book1-Book4. Each Book gives a bonus to the result modifier making it easy to compound items and achieve success. Book1 is +1 Bonus, Book2 is +2 Bonus, Book3 is +3 Bonus, and Book4 is +4 Bonus. So if you use a book when compounding it make achieving your desired Item easier.
Under "Success in compounding", I talked about bonus result modifiers in alchemy. With Superior there is a +2 bonus result modifier. So if you use an Alchemy Book4 in your compound. You would have a minimum Jump of +6 Item Ranks if your compound is successful. It is possible to get a lesser result even with a book than what you are looking for. If you get a -1 result modifier from your alchemy skill. Add in the book4 you used in the compound and your total result modifier would be +3 Item Ranks.
Technically this is a failed compound as you failed to achieve positive success in compounding the items. But the Alchemy book brought it up to a partial success.
Oversuccess or Undersuccess is another issue you may eventually be faced with. As all Items have bases there may be more than one Item in your compounding range. So if you try to compound lets say a King's Gown(IR28). You take a Grass Hat(IR24)+Metal Gown(IR23)+Book2 using Superior Alchemy. You base bonus is +4 with the 2 from Superior Alchemy and the 2 from the Book2. You put Items together and hit the button and a Night Wear(IR29) comes back. What happened was your base result on a success compound was 27. Your alchemy produced a +4 result. So your jump total was +6 Item Ranks. The lowest rank was Metal Gown(IR23). So 23+4+2=29. And Grass/Flower result for Item Rank 29 is Night Wear. Now lets take the opposite side of coin. Lets say you were successful and got the +2 from your superior alchemy skill. 23+2+2=27. A result not high enough for a Kings Gown so it falls back to the closest Grass/Flower Compound which is Party Wear(IR25). Ok now lets say you get a +3 result modifier. 23+3+2=28. So you get your Item Rank 28 but instead of getting a Kings Gown. You get a Plume Clothes. Both King's Gown and Plume Clothes are Item Rank 28 Grass/Flower Compounds.
So even a bit of luck is needed to get the item you want. But if all you needed was a IR28 Grass. You could use Plume Clothes just as good as Kings Gown.
[The Alchemies of Wonderland]
Primary Alchemy is the 1st alchemy you get. I like to use this alchemy for making manufacture materials the most. Junior alchemy doesn't require no stars and only a few things to get and you can get it with level 1 Primary. Even tho I never tried :D
I like this best for making compoundable Manufacture Materials Like Hard Aluminum Plates.
The maximum Item Rank Jump for Primary Alchemy is +4 Item Ranks
It is possible to lose all Item Ranks with Primary down to Item Rank 1
In this alchemy there is a 20% chance that the sub-bases of the compound will be changed to none automatically. For example take Skeleton Steel Sword. Compound is Sea Armor+Wolf Tooth. Steel/Hard Tissue base. You go ahead and compound it and you get one of the numerous claws. You just had a sub-base failure. Basically when it happens your compound turns from Steel/Hard Tissue to Steel/None and you get a Steel based item back.
Whichever Item you put into the big box is the Base Item for the compound. If you compound Iron Net Boots(IR17)+Wolf Tooth(IR20). A +2 result could net you a Skeleton Iron Sword. In Primary Alchemy it doesn't matter which item has the highest Item Rank. It only matters which Item comes first and then other bases in order which they are put in.
Junior Alchemy is the Best alchemy you can get til you level it to lv10 and get stuff together to get Superior. You might be stuck using this for awhile depending on how much effort you put into getting the next alchemy. Not to say Junior is a bad alchemy. Actually it is quite good compared to Primary.
Junior Alchemy has an automatic bonus of +1 ranks on a successful Compound. So if you use an Alchemy Book 4 in the compound you will get a 5 rank jump automatically if the compound is a success are possibly higher. With a Book 4 you can get as high as a 8 Rank jump with Junior on a massive success.
But +5 with a Book4 in theory is 99% even tho it is possible to get a lower result if there is other items within the compound range match the bases, You have a failure, or You have a sub-base failure.
The maximum Item Rank jump is +4 Item Ranks without books.
The maximum Item Rank lose is -8 Item Ranks. But if you are doing a unique based item and you fail and no other items are in range. It will default to a Common Stone or Straw Mushroom.
In this alchemy there is a 20% chance that the sub-bases of the compound will be changed to none automatically. For example take Skeleton Steel Sword. Compound is Sea Armor+Wolf Tooth+Sea Armor. Steel/Hard Tissue base. You go ahead and compound it. And you get one of the numerous claws. You just had a sub-base failure. Basically when it happens your compound turns from Steel/Hard Tissue to Steel/None and you get a Steel based item back.
Whichever base has the most item ranks in the compound will be used as the main base no matter which order you go in. In the Example above Steel was the Base because you compounded IR18 Steel+IR20 Hard Tissue+IR18 Steel. Which equals 36 Item Ranks of Steel and 20 of Hard Tissue. Which makes the base Steel/Hard Tissue even tho the Wolf Tooth is higher rank than Sea Armor.
Superior is the best alchemy in the game period. If you plan on doing any serious compounding in this game. This is the alchemy you should get.
Superior Alchemy has an automatic bonus of +2 ranks on a successful Compound. So if you use an Alchemy Book 4 in the compound you will get a 6 rank jump automatically if the compound is a successful and possibly higher. With a Book 4 you can get as high as a 9 Rank jump with Superior on a massive success. But +6 with a Book4 is 99% even tho it is possible to get a lower result if there is other items within the compound range match the bases.
The maximum Item Rank jump is +5 Item Ranks. But +5 is extremely rare do not try to do it too often or you will be disappointed over and over.
The maximum Item Rank lose is -7 Item Ranks. Tho if you fail on a unique base item and there is no others within range. You will get a Common Stone or Straw Mushroom.
No Sub-base Failures but a catch
Superior alchemy is a 100/0 alchemy for sub-bases. There is a 0% chance you lose the sub-base. This is a big difference over Junior alchemy. It is good and bad.
Why is it good? Because if you compound Grass/Flower for example. You will always get a Grass/Flower back.
How is it bad. Because Superior alchemy is a lot better than Junior. Most people will use it more than Junior. Lets say you compound Gray Steel Bracers+Emerald Necklace. On a successful compound with superior you will get a Jade Helmet. On a failure you will get a common stone. Why do you get a common stone? Because the sub-base has a 0% of Failure. If you fail the compound it will look for more compounds in the range that is base Titanium/Jade. Since there is no lower compounds besides Jade Helmet that is Titanium/Jade base right now it converts it base to None. Which is a Common stone.
But if you make a compound that has an Item in range. It will give a lower rank item based off the bases. So if you make a Grass/Flower based Item and it fails. You will get a Grass/Flower based Item Back. But for making unique items with lots of bases that don't match anything else. If you fail you will get a common stone.
This is the only advantage Junior has over Superior. With Junior you have a 20% chance if you have a sub-base failure to get a Primary Base item back on unique base compounds. But the overall higher success rate Superior has will never merit using Junior over Superior. Just something to think about.
Alchemy Books can be used with any alchemy. But Superior almost never fails to give you a higher rank item if you use an Alchemy book with it. But if it does fail 90% of the time you will get your base Item back if it is compoundable. Which will lead you to believe it is meant to be used with Alchemy Books.
Whichever item has the highest item ranks in the compound will be used as the base no matter which order you go in. Quick example, Skeleton Steel Sword -> you compounded IR18 Steel+IR20 Hard Tissue+IR18 Steel. Which equals 36 Item Ranks of Steel and 20 of Hard Tissue. Which makes the base Steel/Hard Tissue even tho the Wolf Tooth is higher rank than Sea Armor.
This is how I perceive alchemy in Wonderland. I have ben very successful following these rules and mottos. Plus it helps to clear up any confusion on how alchemy works. I am pretty sure this is accurate as I have been compounding with these rules for over 2 and a half years now. Hope this has been helpful. Good Luck compounding :)
