Since I saw there were a few people asking about this i thought i would explain.

the number is the difference in rank between the produced item and the lowest rank of any of the components.

for instance, if you compound a rank 6 and a rank 8 item to product a rank 10 item...this would be +4 (hence 10 - 6) since the result gained 4 ranks up.

for primary alchemy, +4 is the most ranks a compound can gain without alchemy books, thus making it the hardest to produce. compounds with lower or negative numbers are more common than items with +3/+4 or higher.

Hey Scott, the way you worded it, ity sounded like you were saying that for Junior or higher Alchemy Skill that you could compound higher than +4 is that what you were implying?
I imagine we haven't had the improved skills long enough to know, hey?

Senior is only one that gives more
instead of 4 it will get 5+
junior has better chances then primary but only works good
when items are same rank

have you ever ran in circles while thinking
how many other people in the world are running in
circles at this very moment?
deep stuff huh? XD

ok i'll try to explain it a little better.

take this compound for an example:

aluminum plate (R6) = aluminum ore (R3) + granite (R6)

since aluminum ore is the lowest rank (R3), the maximum ranks the result of this compound can increase with primary alchemy (without alchemy books) is +4. so you have the possibly of producing a R7 aluminum based item (hard aluminum plate). you also have the possibility of producing any aluminum based item between R1 and R7.

in this case the result is aluminum plate (R6) which is +3 ranks from the lowest item in the components...hence the compound says (Primary +3)

basically,

+4 is the hardest to obtain so getting a hard aluminum plate will be very hard.
+3 is a little easier since it is only 3 ranks higher then the lowest component
+2 and +1 and 0 or any negative numbers are the easiest to produce because the result does not have to rise as many ranks

so...higher + numbers mean the compound is harder to produce, lower numbers or negative numbers are easier to make.

higher alchemy skill will improve the chances of getting a higher rank item as a result.

Thanks, now I understand how it works. I'm going to enjoy compounding hehe. But I have a question. In your compounding list -

take this compound for an example:

aluminum plate (R6) = aluminum ore (R3) + granite (R6)

Which item goes first?

Read it from left to right after the equal sign.
aluminum ore (R3) + granite (R6) (So the ore goes first, then the granite. Aluminum plate is the outcome; please note that formula may also produce aluminum hard plate/sand/ore, or on occasion common stone)

I still didnt get negative mark thing.

I tought they explain what level and what kind alchemy it wants. For example:
there is a compound and there is "Primary +3" next to it. I tought that compound needs lvl 3 or higher primary alchemy for high chance of succes. isnt it so? @.@

no it isnt. it means that the rank of the item has risen 3 levels.

If its a negative mark: its a fail.

You can calculate with it if you _really_ need an alchemy book to do the compound yes or no, and the possibility to get the item.

EG: primary+3: no alchemy book needed, but it has to rise 3 levels (4=max) thus the compound will come out less then for example a primary+1 compound.

Thanks VERY much for explaining that!! I thought the numbers meant your xp went down or something.I recently learned J .Alch, and I'm still learning how to navigate this system...

==" just put it short,
for a R6 to get to R10 , 4 rank jump is needed = +4 .

If u compound 2 different rank like R3 and R6, the lower rank will be the one considered how many rank to jump to, Example R3 + R6 = R10 , +7 jump is needed.
If it drops in rank, it will be consider as negative = -1 or some negative numbers

so + 6 + 7 + 8

Should I not go for that?

Is it harder everytime you move up in jump?
